Red Earth

One of the most amazing things about PEI is the red earth.  They say it is because there is a lot of iron in the soil and it is rusting.  I don't know if that is true.  What amazes me is that when you compost things, it produces black soil.  How is it that after thousands/millions of years, the composted material has not changed the colour of the soil?

The Red Soil is honoured on some of the churches with striped steeples.
