Cabot Trail

After taking the night ferry from Nfld to Nova Scotia, I rented a car to do the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island.  Everyone said I'd have a much better experience if I did it in a car because of the steep hills and the sharp drop-offs to the sea.  In retrospect, it was a good idea to have a car but mostly because of the pot holes on the eastern side of the trail.  The motorhome would have been shaken up pretty badly and I would have had to go quite slow.  However, after driving in BC and the Rocky Mountains, I was not awed by this road as much as easterners are.

The views are amazing along this road and my only regret is that I couldn't do it when the leaves were in full colour.  They were just starting to change and a few of the maples had some red leaves.

Here I am on the Cabot Trail.

How would you like to spend a Canadian winter in a place like this shieling in the early 1800s? This stone building was 1/2 house and 1/2 barn.  That big hole on the barn/north side would have been filled with peat sod during storms.  It must have been a brutal life.
