Dangerous Farm Equipment

It looks pretty harmless but his is a very dangerous piece of equipment!

In preparation for the first farmer's market, I was peeling and slicing apples for the apple pies.  That day I was peeling "uncooperative" apples and I was struggling to keep the apple straight.  See that little upside down U-shaped part where the peel is coming off.....well, its really really really sharp! Somehow, in a split second, I managed to slice off part of my thumb nail.  Needless to say, I was relieved of that duty and left to tend to my wound while the work went on.

I wish I had taken a picture of my thumb that day, May 15.  The piece that was missing ran along the length of my thumb nail and was almost 1/2 inch long and 1/8 inch wide.  I was sure it would be very painful and that it would take 3 - 6 months to grow back.  My nails don't grow very fast.

I remembered that the comfrey plant is good for healing cuts and bones and I knew that the comfrey was just coming up in the garden.  I picked a couple of leaves that were only about 1 1/2 inches long and ground them up and put them on the wound.  I repeated that every day for about a week.  After about 2 weeks I couldn't believe how much nail had grown back.  At least 1/2 of the missing nail was back. It is now a month later and the nail has only about 1/16 inch to go.  Comfrey is a potent healing plant.
Here is what the plant looks like now.  Its hard to believe it was just coming up a month ago.

PS.  The next week, I thought I should "get back on the horse" so I was peeling apples again.  I bent over to pick something up and banged my head on the cupboard door.  Who knew that peeling apples was such dangerous work!
