Coping with Rock

I noticed techniques for living on a rock were the same in different parts of the country.

In Newfoundland, Cape Breton and on Manitoulin Island posts and power/telephone poles were often supported by a box of rocks like this.

This "box" is about 3 ft high and about 4x6 ft on each side.
In this case it is holding the posts for a sign.
Split rail fences are a way to make a fence when you can't put posts in the rock.  I saw lots of old ones but here's a brand new one showing that this old technique is still used today.
