I noticed techniques for living on a rock were the same in different parts of the country.
In Newfoundland, Cape Breton and on Manitoulin Island posts and power/telephone poles were often supported by a box of rocks like this.

Split rail fences are a way to make a fence when you can't put posts in the rock. I saw lots of old ones but here's a brand new one showing that this old technique is still used today.
